JOY + PAIN

JOY + PAIN, released November 1, 2005, is available on
CDBaby.  Here are some of the songs:

You are My Pain

Break Free

Here are the lyrics:
Bang the Drum
Yeah we’re coming, Yeah we’re coming,
Yeah we’re coming to your town real soon.
And we’re banging on the war drum,
And we’re having our Holy High Noon.
I know you’re starving, I know you’re dying
But the Big Mac will be here soon.
And we’re rounding up the bad guys,
And we’re putting them in the Democracy-Reprogramming-Program or something like that.

In our quest to understand Islam, we pray for guidance and drop the bomb.

And I’m banging, yeah I’m banging, yeah I’m banging on the war drum now.
I forgot to love my neighbor, I forgot to which King I bow.

Who is my King now baby, who is my King now?
Who is my King now baby, who is my King now?

I could pray for peace and Kingdom come, but I’d rather sit here and bang my drum.

Yeah we’re here!  Don’t you love us? From the land of fluoride and immaculate hygiene
And we’re rounding up the bad guys, and we’re making them bow down to our King.

Who is my King now baby, who is my King now?
Who is my King now baby, who is my King now?

Break Free
I want to break free, I want to break free. When the baby’s crying, when I can’t stop lying.
I want to break free, Lord have mercy.

I want to break free from the more disease. When everybody’s fighting, when the wrongs need righting,
I want to break free, Lord have mercy.

When there’s nothing left to say but please just go away, and I haven’t prayed in days,
And I want someone to lay their hands on me. And say that it’s OK, it’s OK.

I want to break free, stop talking to me with all your lies about the one you despise
I want to break free, Lord have mercy.

Joy
I have hands, I can run, I can breathe and this is joy.
There’s a beach, there’s the sun, there’s a wave and this is joy.

I’ve got rhythm, I’ve got music, I’ve got reverb and this is joy.
Free to love, free to sin, free to live and this is joy.

When the frogs and locusts fall down from the sky I’ve got joy.
When I need to pull the plank out of my eye
I’ve got joy. I’ve got joy, I’ve got joy.
Free to choose milk or soy or a blue martini and this is joy.

I’ve got joy, I’ve got joy.

You Are My Pain
A tiny wren, mid-winter night was blown in, lost by my front door.
He looked at me square, fragile, helpless eyes I couldn’t ignore.
Like wanting to speak but without the power to say, his soul was just like yours
And I couldn’t bear to see him fly away.

You are my pain, my bittersweet. The place where love and sorrow meet.
You are my purifying flame and I would have it no other way.

You were gray and silent, the nurse rushed you to the ICU.
Not the Kodak moment I’d pictured seeing and holding you.
Now you are beautiful and strong, silly, chatty and bright.
Love is the burning point of life.

You are my pain, my bittersweet. The place where love and sorrow meet.
You made the wound, a secret cut. And now you need to heal it up.
You are my pain, my bittersweet. The place where love and sorrow meet.
You are my purifying flame and I would have it no other way.

Sunrise
May my lips speak only peace.
May my eyes see God in all I meet.
May my ears hear the silent pain of your sheep.

And may I be free.

"Great stuff!" - Mike Indest, alternativechristianmusic.com
"Four Angels is one of the best and gives hope" - The Phantom Tollbooth

I saw Spike Lee's "Four Little Girls," the documentary about the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama.  Cynthia Wesley, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Addie Mae Collins were killed at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.  This CD is dedicated to them and their parents.  These songs reflect the grieving process - shock and anger, denial, bargaining with God, sadness and eventually acceptance and hope.
Recorded from January 2003 through April 2004 at the Sound Kitchen and Mike's House in Franklin, TN.  All songs by Jan Morrison in 2003.  Produced by Mike Rosen.  Jan: vocals, keyboards, guitar, programming. Mike: keyboards, bass, programming. Tim Lorsch: violin and low-boy. Additional vocals on Darkness, Peace & Four Angels: Ken Nelson, Mark Van Sickle, Sarah Sisk, Susan Harrell, Page Kelley, Carole Mosely & Drew Laney.  Additional vocals on Dwell in My Love & Jesus Said: David Bone.
